Slow Food Bluegrass School Garden Grant

Slow Food Bluegrass and the Kentucky School Garden Network are very pleased to announce the Slow Food Bluegrass School Garden Grant. The Grant is a total of $5,000 distributed over 3 years to be used to support a school garden project in the Bluegrass Region of Kentucky. To be eligible for a Garden Grant, an applicant must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization or nonprofit k-12 school that is developing a school garden project that will help children engage with fresh fruits and vegetables. The grant application deadline is March 1, 2012.

New Roots recieves $1000 from SFBG Chair’s New Faces of Philanthropy Award

Slow Food Bluegrass Chair’s Maggie Keith was chosen for one of 5 New Faces of Philanthropy awards by Nfocus Magazine last month. The award came with a $1000 donation to the award recipient’s organization of choice. Maggie Keith gave her $1000 to Louisville non-profit, New Roots. New Roots mission is to meet the needs of urban communities by improving access to fresh food for urban residents and marketing opportunities in the city for local and regional farmers.

The New Roots program has impacted the local food system through the development of the Fresh Stop Project, a community-driven fresh food distribution program. New Roots also provides nutrition education, conducst health research, and spearheads policy campaigns that will improve the disparities currently present in our food system.

Louisville Collegiate School’s Healthy Bytes series includes video cooking demonstrations, menus, and nutrition facts by Collegiate’s chef, Rachael Reigelman. The video series teaches the Collegiate Community how to make easy and healthy meals at home.

Green B.E.A.N. Delivery Donates 6,872 lbs of carrots and potatoes to Dare to Care

Green B.E.A.N. Delivery donated 2 lbs of fresh produce for each pledge through the NPR fund drive and for the Metro United Way’s fund drive. In total they donated 6,872 pounds of carrots and potatoes to Dare to Care Food Bank on Friday, November 18th, just in time for the holidays! Way to go Green B.E.A.N!
